Tonick Business Publishing Case study

Tonick Business Publishing are the team behind the popular Business Cornwall magazine and www.businesscornwall.co.uk.

Toni and Nick Eyriey, launched the magazine in 2006, are based at Pool Innovation Centre and employ two staff.  The current business includes producing 10 issues of Business Cornwall Magazine per year with 4,500 copies distributed each time; online advertising with their website attracting 15,000 unique visitors each month; business focused events; and a social media following of 30,000 people across all the popular channels.

The Opportunity

Toni had an idea of developing a completely new service, on online booking platform and came to Superfast Business Cornwall for help.

As Toni explains:

“We had plans to develop a new service in the form of an online booking platform and directory that will provide a service akin to Airbnb or booking.com. Focused on the conferencing and business event management sector it will allow a venue to showcase their conference or meeting room facilities, and allow the customer to compare different venues, check availability and ultimately book online.

The new project will allow us to offer an additional service to our current client base. We already work closely with many business venues and will be able to offer them a new online platform to promote their offering. In addition the new service will allow us to grow into new regions; out of the county and nationally.”

The Solution

Steve Edwards, Digital Business Enabler with Superfast Business Cornwall, worked with Tonick to help them to scope out the project and identify what digital technology was needed to get the platform off the ground. Importantly they worked together to ensure the system was able to cope with growth.  Superfast Business Cornwall funded a specialist supplier to produce a specification for a competitive procurement.  Steve continued to support the team throughout the project development and implementation.

The Impact for Tonick

Tonick Business Publishing’s new service called Lacuna Business was launched in October 2018.  It is hoped that as the business develops two more staff will be employed.

Steve Edwards said:

“Not only does Business Cornwall support and promote the Cornish business scene, it is very much part of it. This new service will see this continue and grow further afield.  It has been great working with Toni and to see this idea come to life through the use of digital technology.”

Toni added:

“This new platform will allow us to expand our business base, and therefore our turnover and subsequently our profits. The support from Superfast Business Cornwall has been invaluable and helped us achieve the launch of Lacuna Business.”
