Resource type: Case study
MA Grigg is a long-established family owned country store operating from a large purpose-built site at St Austell and making the most of digital technology to reach customers outside of the County.
They have been trading online since 2010 and 20% of their sales are from outside of Cornwall. With plans to increase online sales they approached Superfast Business Cornwall for support.
Director Fiona Grigg explains:
“We see the opportunity to increase product lines and sales of current lines via our website. Our current systems are a barrier to this as stock is difficult to track, causing time delays and costs in meeting orders.”
Digital Business Enabler, Mike Robertson, worked with the company to scope out a digital project which would help control and track stock, enabling them to offer a wider range of products and reduce turn-around time to meet customer demand.
Funding was provided towards the costs of the design and implementation of a new digital warehouse management system, which integrated with the website and accounting system, giving considerable efficiencies to the business.
Mike continued to provide support throughout the implementation of the project and adds:
“MA Grigg are a local success story, growing their business from the traditional retail model and adapting to the modern customer, who shops online at any time and from anywhere. This project will give the business long term gains and increase overall productivity. It’s been great working with them.”
Impact for the Business
“With the new system we hope to increase sales to existing clients as a result of increased product lines as well as accessing new markets, including exporting overseas. The new investment will enable us to hold more product lines and manage stock levels.
There’s no limit to the markets we can access via online sales and the cost of sales will be reduced by the new stock control system. We can offer our customer base a 21st century online experience.”
The business has employed two new staff as a result of this project and hope to take on more soon.
Could your business benefit from Improved Systems Integration?
Systems integration is ensuring all your software systems and business applications – the ones you have in the cloud and any legacy software you have installed on servers in your office – work together. Faster broadband connections make it easier to access a range of online solutions for your business needs, such as accounting, inventory, payments, CRM or point-of-sale. However, you’re not exploiting such solutions to their full potential if they’re all running as ‘islands of information’ with little or no interaction between them.
The main benefits of getting systems integration right and enabling your IT systems to exchange information include:
- Increasing productivity – enabling different systems to work together can deliver significant productivity benefits, no longer having to manually input the same data into separate programs
- Streamlining processes – integration can result in greater efficiency by helping to eliminate manual processes, enhance existing IT processes or add value through new features
- Improving management information – it is much easier to gain an up-to-date overview of how your business is performing if you only have one system rather than several
- Cost savings – integration can significantly reduce the cost and time involved in maintaining and updating several systems
Integration does not only save you time and money. In freeing you up from much of your day-to-day administrative work it will provide you with the opportunity to focus on real added-value activities, such as identifying new business partners or developing new revenue generating streams.
