Spiral UK Case Study
Spiral UK are experts in the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke spiral, curved and straight staircases.
Based in Helston, the company has been trading since 1985. They also have a showroom in Amersham, Buckinghamshire and a sales office in Cambridgeshire. The business currently employs 50 people.
With customers across the UK, they supply the luxury residential market and commercial sector, including offices, restaurants and universities. They provide high specification staircases for defence sites and construction industry.
Spiral UK approached Superfast Business Cornwall as they were keen to make improvements in their business processes. They had a bottle neck within their design department which was having a knock on effect to staircase production.
Andrew Holland, CEO at Spiral UK, met with Mike Robertson, Digital Business Enabler with Superfast Business Cornwall, and together they reviewed potential options for solving this issue.
The design of the staircases is done using SolidWorks, a specialist Computer Aid Design (CAD) software. It was identified that investing in the latest version of the software and adding new workstations could lead to a significant reduction in design time of a staircase.
Superfast Business Cornwall awarded funding to help the business progress this digital project.
Mike continued to support the business throughout the implementation of their project, also arranging for a specialist to review their network infrastructure and servers. The specialist produced a report of recommendations for improvement. Superfast Business Cornwall also carried out a review of the company’s website giving pointers on how they could make small changes to increase the website’s speed and visability.
Andrew Holland commented:
“This digital project has meant that we can move forward with our growth plans. The improvements in the design department have helped smooth the flow between design and manufacturing leading to a more effective manufacturing process and increased capacity. Investing in the latest software has allowed the team to automate several fundamental modelling tasks and improve the control and management of their 3D data. This has helped progress jobs through the design process around 10% quicker. We have ambitious growth plans so aligning our manufacturing and design capacity will ensure that we have the ability to meet them.”
“Spiral is a successful manufacturer in Cornwall and it has been great to work with them and see their vision for future business growth. Improvements in their design capacity will allow them to move forward with their growth plans.”
Spiral UK was awarded ‘Employer of the Year’ at the 2018 Cornwall Business Awards as well as being short listed in the categories of Manufacturer of the Year, Most Dynamic Growth Business and Entrepreneur of the Year.
Andrew Holland added:
“The support we’ve received from Superfast Business Cornwall has been really beneficial and we are now much better placed to move into new markets and introduce new products.”
