Dr Simon Moores keynote speaker at Connect to the Future Event

Major advances in digital technology, including the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and the internet of things, demonstrating how businesses can use these to transform the way they operate will be the focus of a one day event hosted by Superfast Business Cornwall.

‘Connect to the Future – How digital technology can help boost your business communication’ will explore the technologies available to small and medium sized businesses and look at how companies in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, can practically apply the latest innovations to improve their communications, reach markets outside of the area and boost growth.

Superfast Business Cornwall is a fully-funded service by the European Regional Development Fund to help businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly understand, adopt and exploit digital technology for growth.  There is no cost for eligible businesses to attend the event.

The event is being held at Goonhilly Earth Station, near Helston, and guest speakers will include one of the UK’s top 10 tech thought leaders, along with the founder of an artificial intelligence (AI) company based in Cornwall.

Sebeail Fowell, Programme and Partnership Manager for Superfast Business Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly said digital technologies can open up exciting opportunities for businesses.

She added: “Superfast Business Cornwall is dedicated to supporting organisations to understand, adopt and exploit digital technology for the future success and growth of their business and the wider economy. This event is the ideal place for people to find out more about how the use of emerging technology can become a vital part of the day to day running of their organisations. Helping them work more efficiently, cut costs, reach new markets and develop new services, some of which we can support with grant funding. ”

Businesses attending are promised a jargon-free event featuring workshops, networking opportunities, tours of Goonhilly Earth Station and a digital surgery with the service’s Digital Business Advisers. The two keynote speakers at the event will be:

Dr Simon Moore – Former Technology Ambassador for the British Government, Simon specialises in emerging technologies and predicting the future for business in a digital age.  He was rated in the Top Ten of UK Tech Thought Leaders in 2014. Simon will look at the many technologies now driving the evolution and direction of businesses of all sizes, including the implications surrounding the arrival of the internet of things (IoT) and advances in AI and machine learning.

Garry Barter – CEO and one of the founders of Cornwall-based AI company Hertzian, Garry will describe Hertzian’s experience of bringing AI into the day-to-day operations of an SME and will share his experiences of using external AI-powered tools, the pitfalls of building your own tools and where AI will help in the future.

In addition to this Ben Whorwood from Newquay based tech company Mube will be running a  workshop on collaboration technology: Collaborating across time and space: the power of plain-text and working together in real-time.

This showcase event is part of a wider support programme from Superfast Business Cornwall which includes: a Knowledge Bank of impartial information explaining the benefits of digital technologies for businesses, workshops, one to one support to improve the use of digital technology and grant funding to develop new digital projects.
